Federal Minister for Digital and Transport

learns about digital innovations at BER

As of today, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH is one of the first airports in the world and the first in Germany to have an intelligent, innovative system in operation to optimise handling processes on BER‘s apron. The Digital Turnaround system uses live cameras and self-learning, AI-based software to analyse the handling of aircraft in real time. In the event of delays or deviations, the system makes recommendations to the operational decision-makers at the Airport Control Centre. This enables process partners to react directly, change course and handle aircraft more efficiently in order to further increase punctuality and efficiency at BER.

Dr Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, visited BER to learn about the use of the system on site and, together with airport CEO Aletta von Massenbach and COO Thomas Hoff Andersson, gained an insight into the processes in the Airport Control Centre and on the apron of the airport.

In the first phase of implementation, 16 terminal-related handling positions at BER were equipped with cameras and connected to the system; a further 33 positions will be added over the course of the summer.
