What is a suburban railway doing on the airport grounds? Our airport fire brigade is not only responsible for fire protection at BER itself, but also for the three-kilometre-long railway tunnel under Terminal 1. Since safety has top priority, possible operations are regularly trained.
Until now, our firefighters had to travel to a training centre in Switzerland for such exercises – a time-consuming and costly undertaking. Now we have our own training facility right here on site. Last week, a diesel locomotive transported the two GDR-built class 485 suburban railway carriages from Schöneweide station to BER.
The wagons can be used to simulate the following emergency scenario: a fictitious fire has broken out in a train in a railway tunnel, and the suburban railway has to be evacuated. The fire brigade extinguishes the fire, and colleagues on the train and at the station help to evacuate the passengers. The system is being further expanded.
