Survey flights by the German Air Navigation Service (DFS) are scheduled for the night of November 8 to 9 on the northern runway of BER. A relatively quiet, twin-engine propeller aircraft, the Beechcraft Super King Air 350, will be used. The survey flights will take off and land in a western direction, with certain areas being flown over frequently in succession and at low altitude. Overflights of populated areas will be avoided as much as possible, depending on the prescribed flight profiles.
During the survey flights, the Instrument Landing System (ILS) of the runway will be checked for its accuracy and proper functionality. The ILS assists pilots in daily operations by providing navigation information during the approach. This is primarily done through ground-based signal transmitters that send information about the approach course and glide slope to the aircraft's cockpit during landing.
Therefore, the flights are generally exempt from night flight restrictions. The measurement of the ILS is required at regular intervals by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
