Around 1.5 million passengers use BER in September
At the start of autumn, traffic figures remain at the level of summer travel

After the end of the school holidays and the classic summer travel season, the number of travellers at BER rose again slightly in September compared to the previous month. A total of 1.46 million passengers took off or landed at the airport in the capital region in September. Compared to August 2021, this is around 30,000 more passengers. Compared to the same month in the previous year, September 2020, the number of passengers more than doubled from around 694,000. In September 2019, the then Schönefeld and Tegel airports still handled more than 3.2 million passengers. The aircraft load factor was 77 per cent in September 2021.

Last month, more than 13,300 aircraft movements were recorded at BER, 600 more than in August. Last year, around 9,500 aircraft took off and landed in Schoenefeld or Tegel in September; in September 2019, this figure was almost 26,000 aircraft. Around 2,430 tonnes of goods were handled in air freight last month, an increase of 280 tonnes on August and almost 600 tonnes more than in September 2020, compared with almost 3,020 tonnes in the pre-crisis month of August 2019.

Since April 2021, the airport company has been using its two runways in monthly rotation. This ensures a more even distribution of aircraft noise. In September, the northern runway was used. The attached chart shows the aircraft movements on the individual flight routes.

Aletta von Massenbach, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: "The passenger figures in September show that there is a revival in air traffic beyond pure holiday traffic in the summer. Business travel has also recovered. For October we expect stable traffic figures at about the same level as in recent months. However, how sustainable and pronounced the recovery in demand will be in the winter months remains dependent on the further course of the pandemic."

Here you will find an overview of the use of the flight routes in September 2021.
