Holiday Traffic during the Autumn Vacation / BER expects 900,000 passengers during autumn holidays

Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH is expecting an increased volume of traffic during the autumn vacation. A good 900,000 passengers are expected to use the BER airport between the last day at school, today, and the last day before school recommences, 24 October 2021. It is expected to be particularly busy on the holiday weekends, peaking on Fridays and Sundays. On these two days, the passenger figures will be between 60,000 and 65,000. The day with the largest volume of traffic, due to the commencement of the holidays, will be Friday, October 8th 2021, on which a good 65,000 passengers are expected at the BER.

Flights offered from Berlin

During the vacation period, 64 airlines will be flying to 137 destinations in 49 countries. Travellers’ focus is trained on holiday trips to the sun, to the Mediterranean Region in particular. Majorca, Antalya and Heraklion are the Top 3 holiday destinations for this year’s autumn vacation. As not all routes are as yet being served with the same degree of frequency, city destinations with transfer airports such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam und Zurich are in high demand alongside Spain, Turkey and Greece.

During the autumn vacation, airline companies are offering an extensive mix of flights from the BER to European cities and in particular to popular holiday destinations. Thus, since the beginning of October, it has once again been possible to fly non-stop to Dubai from the BER. The route to the United Arab Emirates is being served by the Latvian airline SmartLynx Airlines, initially twice weekly in cooperation with the package tour operator FTI Touristik. Eurowings, in addition to Majorca, Split, Dubrovnik, Tenerife, La Palma and Lanzarote, is now, coinciding with the beginning of the vacation season, also underway to Fuerteventura. The airline has also increased its domestic German routes by up to five frequencies a week in each case. Ryanair is flying particularly often and, in some cases at higher frequencies, to destinations in Portugal and Spain (Canary Islands and the mainland) as well as to numerous city destinations. easyJet is offering additional flights to popular holiday destinations in Spain such as Lanzarote, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Palma de Majorca or Tenerife as well as Paphos on Cyprus and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt. City destinations such as Paris (Charles de Gaulle Airport) or Edinburgh are also being flown to more frequently.

The most important Travel Tips for Passengers

As some processes at the airport now take significantly longer as a consequence of the control requirements introduced because of Corona and the distancing and hygiene rules that are to be observed, passengers are asked to prepare themselves well for their journeys beforehand, to be at the airport at least two hours prior to take-off, as well as to have their travel and Covid Documents complete and at the ready before going to check-in. The luggage reclaim processes after the flight has landed may also, in part, take longer.

Prior to Arrival at the Airport

• Inform yourself in good time as to the travel conditions and entry requirements in the country to which you are travelling
• Check the flight status with the airline
• Review your travel documents
• If need be, take any necessary Corona test within the prescribed period
• Pack correctly – only one piece of hand luggage per passenger please
• At the Airport
• Be in the terminal at least two hours prior to departure
• Keep your distance from other travellers
• Wear a form of medical mouth and nose protection in the terminal
• Proceed to the security control directly after checking in and dropping your luggage – please hold your boarding pass ready for inspection prior to passing through the boarding pass checkpoint
• Pay attention to notices about waiting times at security control (either on the spot or the website) and proceed to the checkpoint with the shortest waiting times
• Those meeting passengers, please wait in front of the terminal

Automated Luggage Drop

As of now, passengers at BER can check-in autonomously, print out their luggage label and drop the luggage themselves on the luggage conveyor belt. Many airlines, among them easyJet, the Lufthansa-Group, Eurowings, airbaltic and Norwegian already offer their passengers this service fully or partially.
