Increased travel at BER during the summer holidays
Passengers should be in the terminal two-and-a-half hours before departure

The airport company is expecting an increase in travel during the summer holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg. FBB anticipates up to three million passengers during the six-week summer holidays. This is about one million more people than in last year’s summer holidays, but still two million people fewer than in the 2019 summer holidays, the last summer before Covid.

Between 65,000 and around 75,000 passengers will use BER Airport every day in the period from 6 July to 21 August. The number of passengers is distributed relatively evenly over the six weeks of the holiday. According to the airlines’ current bookings, up to 22,000 take-off and landings are scheduled at Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt during the holidays, which is a third more than during the 2021 summer holidays. There were around 37,000 aircraft movements in summer 2019.

A total of 52 airlines fly from BER to 127 destinations in 45 countries during the holiday season. Particularly popular destinations are Turkey, Spain, the UK, Greece, and Italy.

The airport company recommends that all passengers arrive at their respective terminal two-and-a-half hours before departure and proceed to the security control immediately after checking in.

From 1 July, easyJet passengers will have the additional option of using the bag drop on the evening before their flight and checking in their baggage for flights the next morning after checking in online. Lufthansa and Eurowings already provide the option of checking in the evening before.

Many airlines also offer self-service check-in, which can save time (see travel guidelines). The number of self-service machines at BER has been significantly increased for this purpose. A total of 99 of these machines will be available to BER passengers at the start of the holiday in Terminal 1 and 19 in Terminal 2.

More space for better orientation and additional areas to prepare for the security controls have been created thanks to renovations in Terminal 1’s check-in hall. In the security restricted area, eight refurbished moving walkways will be put into operation in time for the start of the holidays.

Aletta von Massenbach, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “We are very happy that people are flying again, whether to go on holiday, visit family or on business. However, the pandemic and its effects are still creating an exceptional situation in the entire aviation industry. In recent weeks and months, the airport company and its partners have made the best possible preparations for the holiday season and the expected three million passengers. Even so, there will be waiting times and delays now and then. Therefore, we ask all our passengers to look into all available information before travelling and prepare themselves accordingly.”
