Large Crowd at Joint Celebration in Schönefeld

Several thousand people bade farewell to BER Terminal 5

Large crowd at the family festival in Schönefeld: several thousand people attended the joint festival thrown by the municipality of Schönefeld and Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH on the area in front of BER Terminal 5 this Saturday. The municipality of Schönefeld also celebrated its 20th anniversary there. At the same time, the airport company said goodbye to BER Terminal 5.

Aletta von Massenbach, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “We are delighted that so many people from both near and far came to this celebration and also said goodbye to our terminal as part of the tours. This shows that there are many memories associated with Berlin-Schönefeld Airport, later Terminal 5. We want to make this special place fit for the future – sustainable use concepts are currently being developed.”

Christian Hentschel, Mayor of Schönefeld: “I have to say, I’m really touched and overjoyed about how well received this festival has been and the large number of guests who came. This completely overwhelmed me and I’m really pleased that many people came not only because of Terminal 5, but actually because of the municipality’s 20th anniversary. Our tents – the town hall tent, local districts’ tent, institutions’ tent – in particular were all very well attended. It makes me immensely proud that Schönefeld is also so interesting for the people here.”

Visitors were treated to a variety of activities on the big stage with performances by nursery and school children from the community and a non-stop music programme. Most visitors took the opportunity to take another look around BER Terminal 5, which has now been decommissioned, with its large viewing terrace. Queues occasionally formed in front of the entrance.

Guests were able to find out about current community life, the history of the Schönefeld site and future projects in the region at numerous stands. The airport company was there with its own tent. There, employees from various departments presented their work and answered questions about flight operations and job prospects at FBB.

The party and dancing in front of the terminal went on until late into the night.

Note for media representatives: For organizational reasons, we request accreditation on site at our press stand in the FBB tent for film and photo shoots in the terminal building. Filming is possible at any time between 12 noon and 6 p.m. during the tours.
