Innovative concepts for the northern airport site
Ideas competition for Quartier SXF 2.0 at BER concluded
Learning, working, exchanging – in a district with a high quality of stay: three renowned architecture and planning offices have developed creative and trendsetting concepts for the future use and design of the northern airport site. This marked the successful conclusion of an ideas competition launched by the airport company in August for Quartier SXF 2.0 at BER’s former Terminal 5.
The airport company, which owns the space, was able to attract COBE Berlin, FABRICations and MLA+ for this competition. All three proposals relate to the history of the airport site and incorporate BER’s former Terminal 5, for example, as a research-related event venue or space for cultural encounters.
The focus of the work is clearly on the broadest possible mix of uses for the site, which has an commercial character, on conference and meeting opportunities, prototyping and urban production, supplemented by temporary housing and combined with art and culture. The future district is clearly oriented towards ecology and sustainability. It offers flexible spaces for working and experimenting as well as green outdoor spaces with extensive relaxation, meeting and socialising offers. All three offices are also keen to involve the Schönefeld community in the site in terms of both urban development and landscape.
Aletta von Massenbach, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “I would like to thank the participating offices for their involvement and their inspiring ideas. All three designs presented detailed exciting potential uses for this aviation site with its proximity to the airfield. We see the concepts presented as very interesting, sustainable approaches for the further development of the site, which is still mostly unused today.”
Ilona Koch, Head of Commercial and Real Estate Management, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “We will take a close look at the submitted concepts and, in the next step, will work out a development and implementation strategy for the site. We will act on ideas from all three offices and develop them further according to their marketability.”
The results of the ideas competition aim to form the basis for the further urban development of the 37-hectare site, on which an innovative and sustainable district will be gradually created over the coming years.
