Solar energy for BER
Construction work begins on first photovoltaic systems

Construction work has started on BER’s first photovoltaic (PV) systems. Three systems will be installed on the roofs of car parks P3, P7 and P8 directly in front of Terminal 1 by the spring of 2025. This is the first step as part of an overall photovoltaic concept at BER. The airport company plans to install PV systems on additional roofs and open spaces by 2030. PV utilisation (development) of two open spaces is currently being put out to tender across the EU.

Aletta von Massenbach, Chief Executive Officer of the Management Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “Renewable energies are an important part of rendering BER’s operations CO2 neutral in the future. I am delighted that we have been able to start installing the photovoltaic systems following extensive planning. They play a key role in the transformation to a sustainable energy supply at BER.”

Based on the yield forecast, the solar systems on the multi-storey car parks will achieve an annual electricity yield of approximately 2.2 GWh. This corresponds to supplying about 600 three-person households with electricity each year. About 5,000 modules will be installed in total. A single module is approximately one by two metres in size and weighs 22 kilograms. The surface area of the three car park roofs totalling 22,000 m² is roughly the size of three football pitches.

Constructing PV systems on airport premises is associated with particular challenges. For example, a specialist report was required on the glare effect and possible radar reflections because the systems will be erected in the direct vicinity of runways.

FBB is continually further developing BER’s energy supply to meet the increasing requirements for a secure, sustainable and economical supply. The project focuses on the ever-increasing utilisation of renewable energies. In line with the goals of ADV (German Airports Association), FBB undertakes to reduce its CO2 emissions by 65 percent by 2030 compared to 2010 levels and render BER’s operations CO2 neutral by 2045 at the latest.
