Quartier SXF 2.0 will be developed north of BER. The site is located between the former BER Terminal 5 and the Schönefeld suburban railway station (S-Bahn) and has excellent transport links. Its close proximity to the railway station, the A113 motorway and the 96a trunk road makes it an attractive piece of real estate. Another unique feature of the district is its direct connection to BER’s airside and apron areas.
In order to do justice to the location, potential and history of the site, an ideas competition was held in summer and autumn 2023. Three renowned architecture and planning offices have developed creative and trendsetting concepts for the future use and design of the northern airport site. The designs presented detailed exciting potential uses for this aviation site with its proximity to the airfield. The unifying heading for the offices “Learning, working, exchanging” outlines the different ideas for a district with a high quality of stay.
The airport company, which owns the space, was able to attract COBE Berlin, FABRICations and MLA+ for this competition. All three proposals relate to the history of the airport site and incorporate BER’s former Terminal 5, for example, as a research-related event venue or space for cultural encounters. All three offices are also keen to involve the Schönefeld community in the site in terms of both urban development and landscape.
The next step will involve the airport company taking a close look at the submitted concepts and working out an development and implementation strategy for the site. All of the three offices’ ideas will be drawn upon and further developed according to their marketability and feasibility as regards urban development.
