Berliner Flughafen-Gesellschaft founded 100 years ago
FBB publishes historical outline marking its anniversary

Berliner Flughafen-Gesellschaft (BFG) was founded 100 years ago on 19 May 1924. It initially operated Tempelhof Airport and subsequently Tegel Airport up until they were closed. BFG was lastly a wholly-owned subsidiary of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) and merged with FBB in 2021. To mark its 100th anniversary, FBB is commemorating the former operator of Berlin’s THF and TXL airports in a detailed historical outline. Under the title “From Tempelhof and Tegel to the World: The History of Berliner Flughafen-Gesellschaft,” non-fiction author Anselm Weyer describes BFG’s role from the founding years to flights in re-unified Germany. The document is augmented by episodes, quotes from contemporary publications and many historical photographs from the airport operator’s archives.

Its eventful history encapsulates the civil aviation beginnings to the dark days of National Socialism, the airlift after the Second World War, Germany’s re-unification and associated travel freedom for all people.”

According to the initial articles of association, Berliner Flughafen-Gesellschaft was to “Expand and operate the airport at Tempelhofer Feld and other aviation facilities in Berlin.” This was geared towards creating a completely new form of civil transport infrastructure. Tegel Airport was added after the Second World War. Tempelhof Airport closed in 2008 while 8 November 2020 saw the closure of Tegel Airport following the opening of Berlin Brandenburg Airport. BFG had, therefore, lost its purpose. The Supervisory Board of Berliner Flughafen-Gesellschaft was convened for the last time on 28 June 2021. It approved the merger of BFG with the parent company Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB). BFG was consigned to history, thus implementing the decision of the Berlin, Brandenburg and German federal government shareholders in 1996 to select Schönefeld as a location for BER.
