Corporate volunteering in Eichwalde

On 10 October 2024, a special work assignment for the apprentices and dual students of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) took place in the BER neighbouring community of Eichwalde. As part of the corporate volunteering programme, more than 40 participants from the airport company came together to help develop and prepare the grounds of Wassersport Eichwalde e.V.

The relatively new association has set itself the goal of offering people in the region easy access to nature and water sports. To this end, the association has leased a water property directly from the municipality at the Eichwalde bathing area, which is to be developed into a new meeting place with sports and leisure facilities for young and old. The previously overgrown property was only handed over to the association this summer and the first step was to make it accessible. The association asked the airport company (FBB) for support with this feat.

FBB therefore organised a day-long work assignment as part of the company's own volunteer programme. FBB's Chief Human Ressources Officer Michael Halberstadt and the general representative of the Eichwalde mayor, Claudia Weiß, welcomed the participants on site. After a short introduction by the water sports club, it was time to get to work: together with the club's volunteers, scrub and roots were removed, debris and rubbish were cleared, and several cubic metres of soil were moved. In addition, fence posts were set, several plant boxes were built and a deadwood hedge was created. The work will help to ensure the safe use of the site and to advance its further development.

The airport company has been committed to the neighbourhood of BER through its corporate volunteering programme as part of its work in the surrounding area since 2014, providing practical support for charitable projects that need additional helping hands.

Michael Halberstadt, Chief Human Ressources Officer at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: ‘With our corporate volunteering, we have been supporting various projects with the manpower of our employees for ten years now. I am very pleased that we always manage to get so many colleagues involved in these projects, enabling us to get involved in a very practical way in the communities around BER. Many thanks to all the participants for their hard work and great commitment in Eichwalde.’

Alexander Sredzki, 2nd Chairman of Wassersport Eichwalde e.V.: ‘We are very enthusiastic about the support from BER and the fact that so many employees have agreed to take part in the campaign. Today's work brings us a step closer to our goal of opening the property to the public and, in the long term, offering water sports here for people in the region. Thank you very much!’
