Special survey flight

on 31 July 2025 (at night)

Published: 28 July 2025, 10:37

A survey flight by German air traffic control (DFS) has been announced for the night of 31 July 2025 at BER. A relatively quiet, twin-engine Beechcraft Super King Air 350 propeller aircraft will be used for this flight.

During the calibration flight, the rotating radio beacon and distance measuring system (DVOR/DME) are checked for accuracy and proper functioning. Both systems assist pilots with navigation during daily flight operations. Overflights are conducted within a radius of 25 kilometres around the airport. This special test requires flights in circular patterns with radii of approximately 25 and 10 kilometres. Take-off procedures in various directions are also carried out. The overflights often take place in quick succession and at low altitudes. Overflights of towns and villages are avoided as far as possible within the specified flight profiles.

As usual, the calibration flight will take place at night, as air traffic during the day does not permit this and the systems cannot be used for operational purposes during the flight calibration.
