Corporate Volunteering in Selchow

Published: 16 October 2025, 13:55

For the second time this year, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) is getting involved in its immediate neighbourhood with a corporate volunteering initiative: on Wednesday, 15 October 2025, around 15 FBB employees volunteered their time in the Schönefeld district of Selchow, helping to improve the village centre by carrying out various small-scale measures. Together with participants from the Schönefeld community and the Selchow local council, the all-day ‘autumn clean-up’ included, among other things, building and planting new raised beds, constructing and installing several nesting boxes, and installing an insect hotel. In addition, leaves were raked, weeds were removed, and a pile of stones was built. Flowers, shrubs and grasses were planted in various locations, and the circular bench by the old village oak tree was given a fresh coat of paint. In addition, the war graves in the church cemetery and the flower beds at the war memorial were tended to. To implement the project, the municipality received advance support from FBB in the form of a monetary donation to purchase the necessary materials.

Selchow is one of six districts in the municipality of Schönefeld in the Dahme-Spreewald district. The village is located immediately west of Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). Due to the expansion of Schönefeld Airport to BER, part of the original population of Selchow was resettled, among other things to Großziethen.

The municipality of Schönefeld, and in particular the mayor of Selchow, Lutz Ribbecke, were visibly enthusiastic about the campaign and the commitment of FBB colleagues to the community and thus to the people in the immediate vicinity of BER.

"It's great to see how much motivation and heart the volunteers from BER have put into their work in Selchow today. Together, we have achieved a great deal and the results are truly impressive. In a small community like Selchow, this makes a big difference to the people who live here. So thank you very much to the airport company for its commitment and, of course, many thanks to all the participants. Without them, none of this would have been possible!"

About FBB's corporate volunteering programme

Corporate volunteering is a company volunteer programme that forms part of FBB's regional commitment. The aim of the programme is to support social institutions and charitable organisations in the region – beyond financial support. To this end, FBB organises regular work assignments in which volunteer employees leave their usual workplace for a day to actively support the implementation of a social project in the neighbourhood of BER. In addition to its commitment to a good cause, the programme promotes the personal development of employees and cohesion within the company.

FBB's volunteer programme has been in existence for more than ten years and is organised by the community outreach team. From renovation work in schools and daycare centres to clean-up campaigns and tree planting to the redesign of the outdoor areas of youth clubs or care facilities, the programme enables targeted support for social institutions and underlines the airport company's commitment to the community.
