Two million passengers in one month at BER for the first time
Higher passenger volume in September than during the summer holidays

More than two million passengers have travelled through BER in one month for the first time since the opening of the airport. Exactly 2,066,204 passengers were counted at the capital city airport in September. Around 130,000 more passengers used BER in the past month compared to the previous month of August. The last time there were more than two million passengers in the capital region was February 2020. When travel options were restricted in March 2020, around one million passengers were still flying from Tegel and Schönefeld. The lowest point was reached in April 2020 with just 27,500 passengers. Aircraft occupancy in September was 85.1 percent.

Last month, 15,900 aircraft took off and landed in the capital region – 1,100 more than in August 2022. There were 13,300 take-offs and landings recorded in September last year compared to 25,700 in the pre-pandemic year 2019.

A total of around 2,900 tonnes of air cargo were handled last month, almost 500 tonnes more than in the same month last year 2021. It was 3,000 tonnes of air cargo in September 2019.

Aletta von Massenbach, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “Passenger numbers developed encouragingly in September with two million passengers in one month for the first time. One reason for the growth was that we are once again able to welcome international guests at BER, who are also visiting trade fairs and events in the capital region. Since spring, the demand for holidays and business travel in the region has developed dynamically, exceeding our forecast for the whole year. We now expect a total of 18.6 million passengers in 2022. How transport will develop in the medium term is also linked to the progress of the coronavirus pandemic, the development of raw material prices and the international security situation.”
