Berlin Brandenburg Airport receives certificate for carbon management

Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 3 achieved

Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) BER´s operator has been certified for its climate protection activities. It took part in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) for the first time and achieved Level 3 of this programme on its first attempt.

The ACA is a procedure for recording and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The European airport association Airports Council International Europe (ACI) uses this to determine and assess airports’ carbon management and any measures they take to reduce their carbon footprint. The audit is carried out by independent external experts.

Therefore, the certification offers airports a common framework for active carbon management with measurable targets. The ACA defines a total of seven levels with each level requiring specific targets and measures to reduce carbon emissions.

With Level 3, the ACA certifies that Flughafengesellschaft Berlin Brandenburg is consistently reducing the carbon emissions of the airport infrastructure it operates. This can be achieved in particular by using renewable energies, improving energy efficiency, optimising airport-specific facilities and expanding sustainable mobility on the apron. FBB also supports its business partners at BER in reducing their emissions.

FBB is committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 65 percent by 2030 compared to 2010 and making BER operations carbon neutral by no later than 2045.

Olivier Jankovec, Director General at ACI EUROPE: “Congratulations to Berlin Brandenburg Airport for their remarkable achievement – entering the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme directly at Level 3 Optimisation. With their sights on becoming a Net Zero airport by 2045, BER is taking tangible steps to reduce their own emissions, while at the same time engaging their business partners, including airlines, in their carbon management journey.  Their efforts are truly commendable as they do contribute to the decarbonisation of the entire air transport sector. We very much look forward to keep working closely with the BER team all the way to Net Zero.”

Aletta von Massenbach, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “We take the goal of becoming a carbon-neutral airport very seriously. BER’s direct achievement of Level 3 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation shows that our efforts have paid off and that we are on the right track. For us, this is also an incentive for the coming years. From now on, we will regularly commission ACA to have our activities independently assessed.”

Dr Arne Diedrich, Sustainability Manager at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “Thanks to our intensive work in recent years, we were able to skip the first two levels of Airport Carbon Accreditation. In future, we will work towards interlinking our energy management even more closely with our climate protection measures. Our aim is to continuously improve our carbon management and to be validated at further levels.”
