Travellers can look forward to a significantly expanded range of Duty Free and Travel Value shopping facilities at Berlin Brandenburg Airport in future. Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH and the travel retail specialist Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co. KG have extended their long-standing partnership and signed a corresponding agreement. They have, therefore, also laid the foundations for a comprehensive expansion of the Duty Free and Travel Value areas within the security restricted area of Terminal 1 at BER.
The Market Place behind the security checkpoint in Terminal 1 will undergo further development from autumn 2026. As part of this, the retail space will be expanded to around 3,800 square metres.
In addition to a significantly expanded range of shops, a dining area with a direct view of the apron will be integrated to complement the shopping experience. In the future, passengers will be able to relax there in the immediate vicinity of the Duty Free and Travel Value areas and watch the aircraft movements.
The concept for the Market Place’s redevelopment is to be supplemented to include additional seating for waiting passengers, optimised passenger information and a redesigned playground.
The refurbishment work will be performed in several phases and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2028. Passenger and retail operations will continue unrestricted throughout the construction phase.
Aletta von Massenbach, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “In conjunction with Gebr. Heinemann, we are investing in the future and consistently developing the Market Place as the centrepiece of our terminal. By way of the redesign, we are creating more space for people to linger, expanding the range of facilities for passengers and opening up the area more towards the apron. This creates a further attractive area uniquely combining shopping, restaurants and the airport experience. BER’s travel experience will, therefore, be noticeably enhanced.”
Florian Seidel, Chief Sales Officer at Gebr. Heinemann: “The extension of our partnership with Berlin Brandenburg Airport is a strong sign of mutual trust. For Gebr. Heinemann, the agreement underscores our commitment to developing airport retail concepts that are closely tailored to the needs of travelers. At BER, the planned expansion gives us the opportunity to create a future-oriented retail environment that combines a targeted product offering with greater convenience and an overall enhanced passenger experience.“
