Almost a million passengers this February

Signs of recovery in passenger numbers at BER

After the slow start into 2022 due to the pandemic, the first signs of a recovery in passenger numbers were seen at BER in February. A total of around 953,000 passengers passed through the capital's airport in the past month. This means that passenger numbers in February, which is three calendar days shorter, exceed the number of passengers in January by around 186,000.

Compared to the same month last year, when almost 147,000 passengers used BER, the number of passengers increased by almost six and a half times. In February 2019, before the start of the pandemic, over twice as many passengers passed through the former airports at Tegel and Schönefeld, around 2.54 million.

With a total of 10,029 aircraft movements, almost 1,000 more flight movements were registered in February than in January. In February last year, just over 3,000 aircraft took off and landed at BER.

2,426 tons of air freight in February represents an increase of a good 100 tons over the previous month. In the same period of the previous year, around 1,492 tons were handled in the cargo area of BER. Compared to the 2,483 tons of goods in February 2019, the freight volume is currently almost at the pre-crisis level.

Aletta von Massenbach, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “In February we saw the signs of an incipient recovery in air traffic at BER. The announcements of our partner airlines regarding their flight programme for the rest of the year also give reason for optimism that we are at the beginning of a sustained recovery in traffic figures. Now it is a matter of continuing on the path of dealing responsibly with the pandemic and hoping that this terrible war in the heart of Europe can be ended.”

The February 2022 traffic report including the final figures as well as the monthly aircraft noise report will be available online from the end of the month.
