Whether it’s a holiday or a visit to family: Christmas time is travel time. The airport company is expecting a slight increase in holiday travel at BER Airport during the Christmas holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg. Around 600,000 passengers are expected to take off and land at BER between 22 December 2022 and 3 January 2023. Up to 60,000 passengers per day are expected in both terminals on peak days at the beginning and end of the holidays. During the autumn holidays, there were more than 80,000 travellers on peak days.
During the holidays, aircrafts take off for 122 destinations in 50 countries. Sun, snow or city trips: popular destinations are Mediterranean countries like Spain, Italy, Turkey and Portugal. Switzerland, Austria and Scandinavia are popular for winter holidays. When it comes to cities, flights to London, Paris and Copenhagen take the top spots. Doha and New York are popular long-haul destinations.
The Christmas period is normal working time for many of the airport company’s employees, as well as BER’s partners and service providers. On the three days of Christmas, in total around 1,200 employees from the airport company alone will be on duty in the terminals or on the aprons to make sure flight operations are running.
Still no Christmas presents? No problem – there are plenty of opportunities at the airport’s shops for any last-minute Christmas shopping. Restaurants, bars and cafés are open at the usual times. The Rewe supermarket in the public area of Terminal 1 is open from 5 am until midnight if you need to buy any missing ingredients for your Christmas dinner or for breakfast after a late return.
