The servers in the new data centre control all the important services of the airport – from the control centre to the monitors with the flight displays. Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH put the particularly energy-efficient data centre into operation in 2011. The air conditioning system uses outside air for cooling, thereby reducing electricity costs and emissions of harmful greenhouse gases. If the temperature outside is 5°C or less, no additional electricity is consumed to cool the high-performance servers. The consumption of each computer is measured continuously. This enables intelligent energy management.
Normally, the air conditioning and UPS of a data centre require as much energy as the servers. In the new data centre, the energy demand for air conditioning and emergency power was reduced by up to 50% through the use of energy-efficient technologies.
