Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH is gradually modernising the company’s fleet and is switching to vehicles with low fuel consumption and eco-friendly engines. Consumption and emission criteria are taken into consolidation when selecting new vehicles to purchase or lease. With 103 grams of CO2 per kilometre driven, the cars used as standard vehicles since January 2013 have relatively good emission levels.

In the long term, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH believes that alternative fuel and engine types offer considerable potential to reduce fuel consumption and improve the airport’s climate balance. The company is closely observing developments in alternative engine technologies and cooperates with associations and enterprises in the field of electric and hydrogen mobility. For instance, in 2011/12, in cooperation with Vattenfall and BMW, we tested two battery-powered BMW Mini Es and a VW Golf eMotion.  Since 2011, we have been testing an Opel HydroGen 4 with a hydrogen engine. The vehicle is refuelled with hydrogen that is produced using a climate-neutral process. At BER, TOTAL is building a hydrogen refuelling station for hydrogen produced with wind energy.

We are also planning to install recharging stations for ten electric cars in the car park close to the terminal. Vehicles with electric battery-driven engines or hydrogen fuel cells produce no emissions during operation. If the electricity comes from renewable sources or sustainably produced hydrogen then the emissions of greenhouse gases are very low. The airport operator buys green electricity to keep emissions to a minimum. As well as basing the choice of vehicles in our own fleet on robust environmental aspects, we are also examining how the service contractors who work for us can make a contribution to improving the airport’s climate balance and carbon footprint by restructuring their fleets.
