Action within the framework of "Schönefeld reads"

On November 6, 2024, as part of the nationwide Vorlesetag (Reading Day), the Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH and the municipality of Schönefeld organized a joint reading event for the children of the Storchennest and Spatzenhaus daycare centers at BER. They were supported by Barbara Winter from the Eichwalde-based association Kind & Kegel e.V., who introduced the children to the story “When Fox and Hare Say Goodnight” with her interactive program “Literaturalarm”.

The children also had the opportunity to admire the planes and the bustling activity on the BER apron from the observation deck, getting an up-close view of the airport's daily operations.

The event was realized in cooperation with the municipality of Schönefeld, which is organizing the action weeks “Schönefeld reads” in honor of this year's Reading Day. Throughout the project period, various reading events are taking place across the community, with participation from other local partners in addition to BER. The Kind & Kegel e.V. association, with which the airport company maintains a long-standing partnership, has been promoting cultural and extracurricular education for children and young people in the airport region for many years.

The Vorlesetag is a joint initiative by DIE ZEIT, the Stiftung Lesen, and the Deutsche Bahn Stiftung, and was launched 20 years ago. The action day takes place annually on the third Friday in November and is Germany's largest public reading event, designed to inspire both children and adults to appreciate the importance of reading. Since 2012, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH has regularly participated in Vorlesetag, for example, through various reading activities in schools and daycare centers in the airport region.

Michael Halberstadt, Managing Director of Human Resources at Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH:
"The Vorlesetag offers us a valuable opportunity to convey the importance of reading to the children in our region. Stories and reading not only enrich language development but also foster imagination and social interaction. A special thank you goes to the municipality of Schönefeld and Kind & Kegel e.V., our partners in this year's initiative, for supporting us in encouraging the joy of reading among the youngest."
