For us, climate protection means minimising the environmental impact of airport operations and the airport company’s other activities. Continually reducing CO2 emissions is an important field of action here.
Our clear goal: CO2-neutral operations at BER by 2045 at the latest. By 2030, we will have already more than halved our CO2 emissions compared to 2010. To achieve this, we are focussing inter alia on efficient energy management, sustainable mobility solutions and the promotion of renewable energies.
BER is the first airport in Germany to achieve Level 4 Airport Carbon Accreditation
Berlin Brandenburg Airport has once again been recognized for its CO₂ management. BER is the first airport in Germany to achieve Level 4 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA). This represents another milestone on the road to CO₂-neutral airport operations. The award was presented to the public today together with the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, at the Rotes Rathaus.
Airport Carbon Accreditation is a globally recognized certification program of Airport Council International (ACI) EUROPE. The program is implemented in close cooperation with the four ACI regions and supported by ACI World. It evaluates and recognizes the activities of airports to systematically record, control, and reduce their carbon emissions. Participation is voluntary, and the audit is carried out by independent, external experts.
What does Level 4 mean?
With its promotion to Level 4, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) now meets significantly more extensive requirements than at the previous Level 3:
"The Level 4 Airport Carbon Accreditation award is a strong signal of our ambitions in climate protection. Working closely with our partners at BER, we are taking responsibility for the consistent reduction of CO₂ emissions in airport operations. The common goal of all German commercial airports is clear: CO₂-neutral airport operations by 2045 at the latest."
Aletta von Massenbach, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg
"Level 4 Airport Carbon Accreditation is the result of intensive technical work and comprehensive data processing. In addition to Scope 1 and Scope 2, it was particularly important to us to record all relevant Scope 3 emissions and to agree on concrete measures together with our partners. We don't just want to count emissions, we want to reduce them effectively and permanently, together with our partners, contractually secured and scientifically sound. With our CO₂ roadmap, we have defined a clear path to achieving our goals. The new accreditation underscores that we are serious about this."
