Energy policy

We want to manage the dynamic growth of air traffic in the German capital region responsibly with regard to the protection of residents, employees, resources and the climate.

Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) is responsible for the energy supply at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). It operates an energy management system that aims to continuously reduce the negative impact of its operations on resource consumption and climate protection. Continuous improvement in energy efficiency, reduction of energy consumption and the use of renewable energies are hallmarks of sustainable airport operations. The systematic recording, monitoring and analysis of our energy consumption, as well as the implementation of energy-efficient technologies, clear operating procedures and the regulation of responsibilities, ensure that processes are transparent. This energy policy is an integral part of our management system and is based on the requirements of the ISO 50001:2018 standard.

The following energy guidelines, once signed, constitute a binding framework for all business activities at Berlin Brandenburg Airport with regard to the use of energy and resources. They are regularly reviewed to ensure that they remain up to date and effective, and are amended as necessary. All employees and relevant stakeholders are notified of any changes.

Environmental and climate protection as corporate goals

We see energy efficiency and climate protection as cross-cutting tasks. Through the use of state-of-the-art technology, optimised operational management and environmentally conscious user behaviour, we are continuously reducing the specific energy consumption per traffic unit. We are reducing our corporate carbon footprint through the use of renewable energies. The areas, facilities and buildings we manage, as well as the vehicles and equipment we operate, form the basis for our balance sheet. We strive to continuously improve energy efficiency and have set ourselves ambitious, measurable energy and climate targets.

FBB is committed to making the airport operations for which it is responsible CO2-neutral by 2045 at the latest (Scope 1 + 2). The interim target is to reduce CO2 emissions by 65% by 2030 compared to the base year 2010, including emissions from Schönefeld and Tegel airports. Where possible, the focus is on the actual reduction of CO2 emissions and on local and regional energy use. If not all emissions from the base year 2010 can be avoided or reduced by the end of the planning horizon in 2045, the concept of neutrality allows up to 10 per cent of the emissions from the base year 2010 to be offset by compensation measures.

The company management is responsible for implementing and continuously improving the energy management system and supports employees in implementing the energy and climate policy. They and the managers also take on these issues as a strategic management task and act as role models. Potentially negative effects of business decisions are taken into account from the outset and thus avoided.

Energy efficiency and climate protection are key selection criteria for us when procuring and dimensioning new systems, products and services in line with our requirements. FBB and its subsidiaries undertake to comply with all applicable laws, regulations and other (official) requirements that apply to our company.

Implementation and monitoring

We continuously monitor, evaluate and document the negative effects of our business activities and our consumption of resources and energy in energy audits and internal reviews. Results and progress are documented and evaluated so that corrective measures can be initiated in good time.

Promotion of environmental awareness and incorporating our business partners

We train and qualify all employees and promote their awareness of energy-efficient practices. We also provide training measures so that everyone can contribute to climate protection and resource conservation in their workplace. We involve airlines, service providers and other business partners in these issues. In addition to its direct responsibility for actual airport operations (Scope 1 + 2), the company works with its respective partners to identify opportunities for reducing their emissions and also provides infrastructure for this purpose (Scope 3).

Information and dialogue

We seek open and objective dialogue with the various stakeholders at the airport. We regularly inform the public about our ongoing efforts in the areas of energy efficiency and climate protection.
