The airport company (FBB) not only takes care of BER’s operations. By way of a series of ambitious ecological projects it also ensures that action is taken to counter the unavoidable changes to nature and the landscape caused by the construction of BER. All the interventions in the flora and fauna, soil and the water balance, as well as in the appearance and the recreational function of the landscape were assessed in an environmental impact assessment as early as 2004 as part of the planning approval decision. The outcome of the assessment meant that FBB undertook to put in place compensation measures. Today, numerous compensation measures around BER are proving successful. To create real ecological added value for the region in the long-term, FBB shall assume the maintenance of the nature conservation measures for 25 years.
