Monitoring

Monitoring accompanies
the work

By way of the compensation measures, FBB aims to achieve a sustainable positive environmental impact. To that end, the effects of the implemented nature conservation measures are observed by the airport company in the long-term and have been accompanied by professional monitoring since 2013. During the monitoring process, different areas are reviewed each year, plant species and biotopes are recorded and the ecological development is analysed on this basis.

Biodiversity creates habitats

The following principle applies to the compensation measures: The more diverse the vegetation and habitats in an area, the more opportunities animal species have to colonise. And it is working. Annual surveys of breeding birds in the Zülowniederung have shown that the number of breeding territories has more than doubled since the measures commenced in 2013. The fact that the number of bird species varies from year to year is primarily due to regional and climatic effects over which FBB has no influence. However, the compensation measures implemented by FBB create new habitats for native bird species from year to year.
