Reducing CO2 emissions is essential for sustainable corporate development. We have committed to reducing our Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO2 emissions by 65 per cent by 2030 compared to 2010, and to achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 at the latest. The baseline year for this is 2010, based on the CO2 emissions for which FBB is responsible at the Schönefeld and Tegel airport sites. This is in line with both the German government’s targets and those of the Association of German Commercial Airports (ADV). CO2 neutrality will be achieved through reduction, substitution and offsetting.
Scope 3 emissions are caused, among other things, by upstream transport links and downstream flight operations, and do not fall under the direct responsibility of the airport operator. Nevertheless, we view the airport as an integrated system and wish to exploit joint reduction potentials with our partners.
By 2023, the airport operator’s CO2 emissions had been reduced by around half compared with the base year of 2010, thanks to a wide range of measures. This means we are currently on track to meet our reduction targets. These measures include the introduction of the ISO 50001 energy management system, the expansion of e-mobility, the conversion of lighting to LED, the use of algorithms for the control and regulation of building operations, and the reduction of CHP plant operation in the summer.
