In 2025, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) is continuing its long-standing commitment to the airport region: on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, another corporate volunteering event took place. This time, 23 volunteers from FBB spent a day helping the evangelical daycare centre ‘Mirjam’ in Schulzendorf to redesign its outdoor area. Thanks to the many helping hands, new sun sails were installed to provide shade for the outdoor play area, raised beds were built and filled, approx. 20m³ of fresh soil was spread over the open spaces, new grass was sown and the sandpits were cleaned of leaves and dirt. In addition, the children can now enjoy a newly created snack garden. To implement the project, the FBB also supported the daycare centre in advance with a financial donation for the purchase of the necessary materials. The ‘Mirjam’ daycare centre, which opened in 2023, is located in a newly developed area called Mühlenschlag and can accommodate up to 100 children. The facility is run by the Evangelical Association for Daycare and Family (EVKF).
The mayor of Schulzendorf, Markus Mücke, who welcomed the participants at the start, was visibly impressed by the commitment shown by the FBB employees. This is a wonderful initiative for the daycare centre and thus for the people living in the immediate vicinity of BER, just in time for Neighbourhood Day on 23 May 2025.
The aim of corporate volunteering is to support social institutions and charitable organisations in the region beyond financial means. With active help – where extra hands are needed. The volunteer programme has been in place for more than 10 years. It offers interested FBB employees the opportunity to leave their usual workplace for a day to actively support the implementation of a social project in collaboration with the FBB-Umlandarbeit team. At the same time, the programme promotes the personal development of employees and team spirit within the company. The assignment in Schulzendorf is already the 16th of its kind. From renovation work in daycare centres and schools to support in refugee shelters and care facilities to reforestation, the programme enables targeted support for regional institutions and underlines FBB's social responsibility for its local community.
