Survey flights

in the night of 7 to 8 November

Published: 03 November 2025, 12:00

Survey flights by German Air Traffic Control (DFS) have been announced for the night of 7 to 8 November on the north runway at BER. A relatively quiet, twin-engine Beechcraft Super King Air 350 propeller aircraft will be used for this purpose. The survey flights will take off and land in a westerly direction, with certain regions being flown over frequently in succession and at low altitude. Overflights of towns and villages will be avoided as far as the specified flight profiles allow.

During the survey flights, the instrument landing system (ILS) of the runway will be checked for accuracy and fault-free operation. The ILS assists pilots in their daily flight operations by providing navigation assistance during the approach. This is essentially achieved by means of signal transmitters on the ground, which send information about the approach course and glide angle to the aircraft cockpit during landing.

The specially equipped survey aircraft checks the precision of the signals required for safe landings. As usual, the calibration flights take place at night, as air traffic does not allow this during the day and the ILS cannot be used operationally during flight calibration.

The flights are therefore generally exempt from night flight restrictions. The calibration of the ILS is prescribed at regular intervals by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
