Passenger numbers at BER continue to fall in January / Tighter lockdown has massive impact on all air traffic

Passenger volume continued to decline at the beginning of the year because of the coronavirus pandemic and tightened lockdown: 207,620 passengers were handled at Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt in January. This is a good 57,000 fewer passengers than in the previous month of December. Around 91 percent fewer passengers were handled last month compared to January 2020.

The number of aircraft movements in January was around 4,000 take-offs and landings. Almost 20,000 aircraft movements were recorded at Schönefeld and Tegel airports one year earlier. This is a decrease of 80 percent. The extensive global travel restrictions are behind these massive slumps.

The slumps in air freight are less dramatic. Approximately 1,703 tonnes of air freight were transported in January 2021, which is at the same level as in previous months. Compared to January last year, freight traffic has declined by around 35 percent.

Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “The latest lockdown has further weighed down the already low demand for air travel and led to a renewed drastic downturn in traffic at all German airports. The dramatic economic situation will only gradually change when enough vaccines are comprehensively available. However, we are ready as a reliable partner, especially during the crisis, to ensure the supply of essential goods to the capital region.”

The January 2021 traffic report with the final figures will be available online at the end of the month:
