BER expects about 3.7 million passengers during the summer holidays
Important tips and advice for travellers

Summer holidays are just around the corner, the peak travel period of the year. Some 3.7 million passengers are expected to travel via BER Airport during the school holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg, from Wednesday 8 July to Sunday 23 August 2026. That is roughly the same number of people as during last year’s summer holidays. Berlin Brandenburg Airport expects about 400,000 passengers at the start of the holidays alone, from Wednesday 8 July 2026 to Sunday 12 July 2026. The busiest travel days are expected to be Friday 10 July, as well as Friday 21 and Sunday 23 August, at the end of the holidays, with about 90,000 passengers.

The most popular travel destinations are Spain, Turkey, the UK, Italy and Greece. The airlines with the most take-offs and landings during the summer holidays are easyJet, Ryanair and Eurowings.

Wizz Air and Eurowings, in particular, have significantly expanded their summer services. The Hungarian airline now flies to twelve destinations from BER and has increased its total capacity by more than 90 percent compared with last year’s summer timetable. Eurowings has stationed two additional aircraft at BER for the summer timetable and is now flying to London, Lisbon, Sarajevo, Olbia, Naples and to Kavala during the summer holidays. The frequency of flights to Palma de Mallorca has also been increased.

Other airlines are also expanding their services: AJet is flying to Bodrum for the first time, Air Uniqon is launching a new route to Sylt, and Middle East Airlines is launching a service to Beirut for the summer holidays, which will be of particular interest to families with relatives in the region.

Furthermore, BER now offers an expanded range of long-haul services to North America. From 3 July, Air Canada will connect the capital region with Montréal for the first time; Air Transat is once again offering flights to Toronto; and with Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, two US airlines will be providing daily flights to New York.

Book a car parking space in advance

Due to the high demand during the holiday season, it is worthwhile reserving a car parking space online in advance. A week’s parking costs as little as 81 euros. Tip: travellers looking to save money should book the Early Bird rate in good time, starting from 51 euros per week. The Kiss & Fly Deal offers those picking up or dropping off passengers more than 25 percent off parking in the short-stay area directly in front of Terminal 1 for the first hour. The first ten minutes remain free of charge.

The most important travel tips

Use the BER website or app to familiarise yourself with airport procedures and book parking spaces in advance online for a more relaxed start to your holiday. The airport operator recommends all holidaymakers to check in online in advance and follow the instructions provided by their respective airline.

Waiting times for security checks are displayed to travellers in the flight information section of the app and on the website, as well as on screens at the airport, so that travellers can choose the most convenient area for them. All departure gates can be reached via any security checkpoint in Terminal 1 or Terminal 2. The boarding gate usually closes 30 minutes before departure.

Due to the introduction of the European Entry/Exit System (EES), waiting times may be longer when entering or leaving the Schengen Area.

Checking in your own baggage

There are more than 120 self-service kiosks available in both BER terminals, where travellers can print their baggage labels and check in their baggage themselves. 21 airlines offer this service at BER, which can save travellers a significant amount of time. Those travelling with hand baggage only can proceed directly to security control.

Check-in & Boarding

No power banks or e-cigarettes in checked-in baggage

It is important to bear security regulations in mind while packing to avoid unnecessary waiting times and additional checks. Powerbanks and e-cigarettes are prohibited in checked baggage. These may only be carried in hand baggage in compliance with the respective quantity specifications and transport regulations. Travellers are permitted to carry only one standard lighter per person. This needs to be placed separately in the security tray alongside the hand baggage. Lighters are not permitted in checked-in baggage.

Baggage

1,300 additional USB charging points;

At the start of the summer holidays, travellers will be able to use around 1,300 additional USB charging points for mobile devices at seating in the gate areas. While approximately 800 charging points have already been installed in the Main Pier, a further 500 connections will be added in the North Pier by the beginning of the holiday period.

Family offers
  • Family Lane: at BER, families with children up to the age of 5 accompanied by up to two adults and minor siblings can use the Family Lane at Security Control 5 in Terminal 1.
  • Checking in pushchairs: assengers must check in their own pushchairs and buggies, which exceed a height of 25 cm when folded, at the counter for large and bulky baggage. They can borrow a pushchair free of charge from 21 stations in Terminals 1 and 2 for transport to the departure gate.

Faster through security

Security areas 1 and 5 in Terminal 1 and the security area in Terminal 2 are equipped with modern CT scanners. Passengers no longer need to remove electronic devices and liquids from their hand baggage at these points. Conventional technology is still in use in the central screening areas 2 and 4 of Terminal 1. There, liquids that are taken on board are limited in volume to 100 ml for each container.

Security control

EasyPass

PPassengers who have a biometric passport or new German ID card can use the EasyPass automatic passport control and thus pass through border control more quickly when travelling to a non-EU country. This also applies to third-country nationals aged 12 and above who hold an electronic passport and German residence permit. This is not possible with children’s passports.

EasyPass

European Entry/Exit-System (EES)

Nationals from non-EU countries staying in the European Union for a short period (up to 90 days within a 180-day period) are required to complete the new entry and exit procedure and should allow sufficient time for this. Upon arrival, passengers can pre-register at automated kiosks before proceeding to the border control officers.

Travelling to and from the airport by bus and train

The airport company recommends checking the current traffic situation for the day of arrival. From 18 August 2026 to 31 August 2026, a rail replacement bus service will operate between Schöneweide and Treptower Park S-Bahn stations due to construction work on the S-Bahn line. Travellers should also consider using other modes of transport, such as the FEX or regional trains, for their journey.

Sunflower

Busy places such as airports can be a challenge for people with invisible disabilities. The Sunflower lanyard offers them the opportunity to discreetly signal their disability. This allows staff and fellow travellers to respond sensitively and, where necessary, offer support, extra time or patience. This is not associated with priority treatment for passengers.

Valet Parking

On request, travellers can conveniently drop off their car on the departures level at Terminal 1, directly in front of the check-in hall. The vehicle will be parked and, if requested, cleaned, and will be ready for collection upon arrival in Car Park P3.
