First day since corona with more than 50,000 passengers at BER / The desire to travel increases during the summer holidays / New destinations of Santorini, Reykjavik or Bolzano

The number of passengers at Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt has increased noticeably over the holiday months. Last Friday more than 51,000 passengers passed through BER. The number of passengers exceeded the 50,000 mark in one day for the first time since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis. However, passenger numbers are still well below the figures for summer 2019, which saw up to 120,000 passengers on peak days. Last year, however, only around 30,000 passengers were counted on the main travel days.

More than 60 airlines are currently heading for destinations in around 50 countries. Destinations in the Mediterranean region such as Spain, Turkey, Greece and Italy are particularly popular at the moment. For the first time this summer, flights will be available from Berlin to Thira on Santorini, Tivat in Montenegro and Zakinthos Island. We also welcome our latest airlines Play (Reykjavik) and Sky Alps (Bozen).
Starting in August, Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, will start flying three times a week from BER via Athens to Singapore. Norwegian Airlines is also increasing its flights to Scandinavia.

Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “The positive trend of the last few weeks continues on during the holidays. A holiday mood reigns at our airport, we can literally feel the anticipation of our passengers for beaches, culture and encounters, especially in and around the Mediterranean. We are pleased that our new Terminal 1 has proven itself so well, even with the growing traffic, and that we can also fully cater for the needs of our guests. Now, it remains crucial to keep the coronavirus under control so that the desire to travel continues unabated beyond the summer.”

Since some processes at the airport take significantly longer if social distancing and hygiene rules are observed, passengers are asked to prepare well in advance of departure and to arrive at the airport at least two hours before.
