Daily aircraft noise measurements

 at the ILA

Published: 05 June 2026, 09:00

The time has come again: from 10 to 14 June, the International Aerospace Exhibition ILA will take place. While tens of thousands of visitors watch the flight displays over five days, noise from every single flight is measured behind the scenes.

The regulatory requirements for noise protection are clearly defined to safeguard people at the ILA and in the surrounding area of BER: among other provisions, flight displays must not exceed a maximum of 111 decibels, and at each monitoring location the noise level may not exceed 94 decibels more than 19 times per day.

To monitor aircraft noise, the airport operator conducts noise measurements in the vicinity of the southern runway, beginning as early as Monday, 8 June due to acceptance flights. The measurements are carried out using the existing network of stationary monitoring stations. In addition, two mobile stations are deployed, measuring aircraft noise in Groß Kienitz and Rangsdorf. A further mobile station can be positioned at another location if required. All monitoring stations are equipped with highly sensitive microphones and state-of-the-art electronics, transmitting the measurements in near real time.
