Passenger numbers at BER almost doubled this June / Air traffic picks up significantly with the start of the holidays - but pre-crisis levels are still far off

The number of passengers at Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport (BER) almost doubled last month compared to the previous month. Around 653,000 passengers passed through BER in June 2021. In May there were around 360,000 passengers. One reason for the increase is the lower incidence figures in Europe and the associated relaxation of travel restrictions in several countries, as well as the beginning of the summer holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg. A year ago, in the crisis month of June 2020, almost 170,000 passengers were processed at the now defunct Schönefeld and Tegel airports; in June 2019 this figure was almost 3.3 million.

Last month saw some 7,700 flights in and out of BER, around 2,300 more than in the previous month of May. In June 2020 only around 3,800 aircraft took off and landed in Schönefeld or Tegel, in June 2019 the figure was around 26,000.

In the case of air freight, around 2,200 tons of goods were processed last June, roughly the same as in May 2021. In June 2019, the month before the crisis, this figure was just under 3,000 tons.

Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “The increase in the number of passengers shows that travel is picking up again, especially with the start of holidays. After this prolonged crisis, people are longing for a break and are looking very seriously at the holiday offers. Destinations in the Mediterranean such as Greece, Spain, Turkey and Italy are particularly popular. Even if 2019’s pre-crisis levels remain far off, this is still a good sign. For the weekend (July 2 to 4, 2021) we expect in excess of 40,000 passengers in one day for the first time.”

The June 2021 traffic report with the final figures will be available online from the end of the month.
